Night Light – Slow Grass is the first full length album from Burning Velvet, aka Nicolai Wøldike Schmith. The double album is a collection of songs played, produced, recorded and written by Burning Velvet. So it truly is a solo effort with help only with recording assistance on four tracks by Lars Lundholm at Black Tornado Studios and the mastering skills of american master-wiz Timothy Stollenwerk (Bonnie Prince Billy, Ariel Pink, AA Bondy & Cedric Burnside), who also mastered the debut single (A Lonesome Sound // Gone Real Gone), which was released in March 2016.

The overall approach was to record the songs as pure as possible. So all vocals and basic accompanying chords have been recorded in one take and kept that way. All the recordings by NWS have been made in his own Glazier Rd HomeStudio including the use of a vast collection of cheap oddball vintage mics and mono taperecorders. All mixes were made on computer but virtually no cuts or edits were made on separate tracks – only adding compression, reverbs, delays, distortions and setting the levels.

The title of the album fits the recording process which was mainly at night when it was quiet and calm. Night and Light being contradicting terms (except in the winter or summer in the high north), but also a litteral translation of the danish name for the night blooming plant Oenothera Glazioviana, also nicknamed Eight-O-Clock flower in danish, releasing a sweet scent when the night sets in.

Having been a lover of americana music, alt. folk, country and bluegrass – this album is also Nicolai’s version of the bluegrass genre...
